Deep in the heart of the Pacific Northwest, where the giant evergreen trees touch the sky and the water looks like a shiny blue mirror, lived a mother duck and her six fluffy yellow ducklings. They loved swimming past the big houses on the lake and splashing near the docks.
But one sunny afternoon, a shadow stretched across the water. High above, a magnificent eagle with sharp eyes and giant wings was soaring in circles.
"Quick! Into the shadows!" quacked Mama Duck, her heart beating fast.
The ducklings didn’t need to be told twice. They paddled their tiny webbed feet as fast as they could, zooming straight under a massive dock. It was dark, cool, and safe beneath the big beams —well out of sight of the big bird in the sky.
The Secret Hideout
Inside their secret hiding spot, three of the bravest ducklings—Barnaby, Pippin, and Daisy—snuggled close together. The eagle eventually flew away toward the trees, but the three little ducklings were still a bit too scared to come out. They decided to stay in their cozy wooden fortress for a little while, listening to the gentle lap-lap-lap of the lake waves.
Meanwhile, Mama Duck swam up and down the shoreline, calling out for her babies. “Quack! Quack!” she called, her voice echoing across the quiet water. She sat on the edge of the dock, looking out at the lake, wishing with all her heart that her little ones would appear.
Underneath the dock, Daisy pricked up her ears. "Listen," she whispered. "That sounds like Mama!"
A Happy Reunion
Barnaby poked his little green beak out from under the wooden planks first. He blinked in the bright sunshine and saw Mama Duck sitting right there on the dock!
"Quack!" Barnaby chirped loudly.
Mama Duck looked down, her eyes lighting up with pure joy. Out waddled Barnaby, followed closely by Pippin and Daisy, shaking the lake water off their fluffy feathers.
Mama Duck flapped her wings and rushed down to greet them, nuzzling them with her warm beak. She was so incredibly proud of how clever her ducklings had been to hide in the perfect spot.
From that day on, the three little ducklings were known as the smartest explorers on the lake. They stayed close to Mama, always ready for a new adventure, knowing that a safe hiding spot was always nearby.
